The most common question buyers ask before purchasing a solar awning: "Is it worth it if I mostly camp under trees or in cloudy weather?" For a standard silicon solar panel, the answer would often be no — silicon drops to around 15% output under 30% tree shade. The SA5900 uses CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) thin-film technology, which behaves fundamentally differently under partial shading. Under the same 30% tree cover, CIGS retains 72% output. On a cloudy day, CIGS holds around 45% output compared to silicon's 25%. The SA5900 is practical in the mixed light conditions that real campsites provide, not just in an open parking lot in full sun.

The SA5900 is the full cassette version of the Awnlux solar awning range. The aluminum cassette shell fully encloses the CIGS solar fabric, roller tube, and mechanism when the awning is retracted — protecting the solar fabric from UV degradation, road debris, and mechanical damage during travel. This matters more for solar fabric than for standard vinyl: CIGS thin-film is durable but benefits from the additional protection of a sealed shell when not in use.

The CIGS solar fabric rolls around a roller tube with a minimum reel diameter of 4cm and is flexible enough to bend 360° without cracking. This is a fundamental advantage over rigid silicon panels, which develop micro-cracks under the repeated deployment and retraction cycles of an awning. Both manual and motorized control versions are available. The motorized version includes a built-in crank handle backup port for manual closure if motor or battery power is unavailable. The maximum size (400cm × 250cm) produces up to 1,080W peak and approximately 4.5 kWh of usable energy per day in good sun conditions — sufficient to run a 12V compressor fridge, lighting, USB charging, and a fan simultaneously without drawing from stored battery capacity. Q5: What is the difference between SA5900 and SA5700?

SA5900 is a full cassette awning — the CIGS solar fabric is fully enclosed in an aluminum shell when retracted, providing the best protection for the solar fabric during travel. SA5700 is a roll-out awning — the solar fabric is exposed when retracted. SA5900 covers 200–400cm wide. SA5700 covers a wider range (up to 21ft / approx. 640cm). Both are available in manual and motorized versions. SA5900 is recommended when fabric protection during travel is a priority.

Q6: Can the SA5900 solar fabric replace the fabric on an existing standard awning?

No. CIGS solar fabric weighs approximately 1.3 kg/m² — three to four times heavier than standard PVC vinyl. Standard awning frames are not designed to carry this load. The SA5900 requires the full Awnlux solar awning frame system. If you have an existing Fiamma or Thule wall bracket, contact us — a 3-in-1 bracket adapter may allow installation without new wall drilling.

Q7: What wind conditions is the SA5900 safe in?

The SA5900 is rated for safe use up to Force 5 (Fresh Breeze, approximately 29–38 km/h sustained). Retract in winds above Force 5 or when conditions are developing unpredictably. The motorized version is compatible with an optional wind sensor for automatic retraction. The manual version retracts using the crank handle.
